Titanic Mill stands in Linthwaite, high in the Colne Valley just west of Huddersfield, and remains one of the most recognisable landmarks in the area. Built in 1911, the same year as the RMS Titanic, and out of the same spirit of technological ambition, the mill took its name from the great ship and grew into one of the largest woollen mills in the district. Today the Grade II listed building has been given a new life, home to the multi-award-winning Titanic Spa along with apartments and a leisure club.
As one of the UK's original eco-spas, sustainability has always run through everything Titanic Spa does, and solar power has been part of that story for years. The site's original array had served the building well for more than two decades, but after 20+ years it had reached the end of its working life. With energy costs continuing to climb, the team approached ACT to replace the ageing system with modern, higher-output technology, all while respecting the character of a much-loved heritage building.
ACT removed the existing 20-year-old solar PV system and installed 192 new panels in its place, creating a 96 kWp system that is expected to generate approximately 85.72 MWh of clean electricity per year. The system features SolarEdge inverters and optimisers, providing panel-level monitoring and ensuring each panel performs to its full potential regardless of shading or the varied conditions across the mill's large roof.
That self-generated electricity now helps power Titanic Spa, from its heated pools and steam rooms to its saunas and treatment suites, reducing the amount of energy the site draws from the grid and supporting the eco ethos that has defined the spa from the very beginning.
More than a century after it was built in the age of the Titanic, the mill is once again looking forward, generating its own clean power and carrying a proud piece of Colne Valley heritage into a low-carbon future.
